Liverpool’s defenders play “like animals”, according to goalkeeper Adrian, following the club’s Super Cup success and strong start to the new Premier League season.

The Reds have gone unbeaten since a penalty shoot-out loss to Manchester City at Wembley in the Community Shield, winning both of their opening games in the top flight and lifting more European silverware, this time against Chelsea in Istanbul.

Having only joined as a free agent in August, former West Ham shot-stopper Adrian found himself drafted into the starting XI following an injury to regular keeper Alisson, with the Spaniard engraving his name into club history as he made a decisive save to halt Tammy Abraham’s spot-kick in the climactic shoot-out.

Speaking to Liverpool’s website following a few whirlwind weeks that saw him claim his first ever trophy in a decade-and-a-half-plus career, the 32-year-old was full of effusive praise for his team-mates, stating that their tenacity and drive helps make his job relatively plain sailing at the back – particularly Virgil van Dijk.

“It’s really easy to play with them in front of you because they were the best defenders in the Premier League [in 2018-19] and we have one of the best defenders in the world,” he stated.

“I think, for me as a goalkeeper, they make easy decisions. Honestly, they defend everything like animals! They help me a lot.

“I played against them [the forwards] many times, so now I play with them and I’m enjoying how they play from behind.
