Tested on real African cards

The AI gear that actually works where you live.

Every AI tool lists a price in dollars. Almost none list what it costs in naira, cedi or shillings — or whether your bank card will be declined at checkout. AfroKit runs the payment test and tells you what happens.

1

We pay, then we report

Every tool here was tested with a real payment method, not a free trial screenshot.

2

We price it locally

Naira, cedi, shilling and rand conversions for every subscription.

3

We show what fails

The declined cards, the hidden limits, the traps. That's the useful part.

4

We update monthly

Bank limits change constantly. Last checked November 2026.

Every tool, side by side

Price in dollars, price in naira, and whether a naira card survives the checkout. Sorted by how much each one actually pays you back.

The payment test

This is the part nobody publishes. Which card works, what the monthly limit actually is, and which tools will silently refuse you.

NigeriaPartial

Naira Debit Card

Bank-specific, ₦ — GTBank raised international limits to $40,000/quarter in 2026; Stanbic IBTC still capped at $100/month

Works with:
  • Grammarly
  • Canva
  • Beacons
  • Hostinger
  • ChatGPT Go
Does not work with:
  • Jasper
  • ElevenLabs
  • Cursor
  • Synthesia
  • Pictory
  • Zapier

Banks have raised international card limits unevenly through 2026. A card that worked in March may be capped in June. Check your bank's current limit before planning a subscription, and keep a virtual USD card as a fallback.

Virtual USD Card

Usually $100-$1,000 depending on tier and verification

Works with:
  • Jasper
  • ElevenLabs
  • Cursor
  • Synthesia
  • Pictory
  • Zapier
  • ChatGPT Plus
Does not work with:
  • Occasional declines when billing address does not match the card's registered address

The standard workaround for paying global SaaS from Africa. Providers: Chipper Cash, Kuda, Grey, Flutterwave Virtual Card. Two rules that prevent most failures — keep the billing address identical to your card's registered address, and hold an extra $5 above the price because gateways place temporary authorisations of $1-$5 above the amount.

Mobile Money

No hard limit, but most global SaaS do not bill M-Pesa or MTN MoMo directly

Works with:
  • Paystack
  • Flutterwave
  • Wise
  • Payoneer
  • Local hosting
  • Selar
  • Jumia
Does not work with:
  • Almost every global AI SaaS as a direct charge method

Mobile money is excellent for receiving money and for local services, but it cannot buy most global AI subscriptions directly. The practical route is to receive USD via Wise or Payoneer, then convert and pay from a virtual card balance.

What creators actually charge

The price of writing fell. The price of building rose. Real rates across six skill categories in 2026.

Where the money is right now

Andela cut 400 junior developers and ended its entry-level programmes in October 2026. That supply shift created these openings.

Verified opportunityDemand: High

AI Data Labelling & QA

$3-$20/hour depending on platform

Difficulty: Low — no degree needed

Companies building AI tools route this work through distributed teams across Lagos, Nairobi, Accra and Kigali. Projects usually start with a short qualification task where the platform checks your accuracy before letting you onto paid work. Interpretation accuracy matters more than speed — loose instruction-following creates noise the model learns from.

High-ticket serviceDemand: Rising fast

AI Workflow Builder

₦300,000-₦800,000 per workflow build

Difficulty: Medium — requires learning one tool deeply

The gap between a basic AI prompter and someone who can command a team of agents. Clients pay for the outcome, not the hours. A five-minute screen recording of an autonomous workflow running is a stronger sales asset than any CV.

Undersupplied nicheDemand: Under-served

Multilingual AI Localisation

$25-$75/hour for B2B work

Difficulty: Medium — needs language plus AI judgement

Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Swahili, Amharic and Wolof localisation combined with AI workflow automation is barely served. A Nigerian freelancer who understands a bank's customer journey, or a Kenyan designer who knows local retail behaviour, holds an advantage generic generation cannot reproduce.

AI Security & Agentic Workflow Audit

$80-$200/hour

Difficulty: High — specialist skill

AI security course enrolments grew 236% in South Africa and 235% in Ghana, and agentic workflow enrolments 195% in South Africa. The learning demand is visible in the numbers, and the consulting side is barely staffed.

Scam alerts

Five schemes currently targeting African creators, how each one works, and exactly how to avoid it.

Comment-bait masterclass funnel

High
How it works

A short video promises passive income from faceless AI channels. You comment a keyword, an automated DM follows into a closed WhatsApp or Telegram group, and you are pushed to buy an overpriced 'masterclass'.

Why it works

The content is usually a rehash of free documentation sold at a large markup.

How to avoid it

Avoid off-platform redirects. Check the instructor's credentials and reviews independently before paying anything.

Malware in fake sponsorship attachments

Critical
How it works

A 'brand' emails about a sponsorship and asks you to open a brief or contract. The attachment is a disguised program such as Brand_Brief.pdf.exe or a zip file containing one.

Why it works

The email looks like a legitimate business opportunity, which is exactly why creators open it.

How to avoid it

Never run an attachment from an unsolicited sponsorship email. Open the file in a sandboxed preview service, or ask the sender to share the brief as a plain PDF link.

Equipment deposit scam

High
How it works

A supposed employer sends equipment (a laptop, a camera, a phone) and asks you to pay a deposit or shipping fee before starting.

Why it works

It mimics the legitimate remote onboarding flow used by real international employers.

How to avoid it

No legitimate employer asks a candidate to pay money to begin work. This one is always a scam.

Crypto doubling scheme

Critical
How it works

You are shown a balance growing on a fake trading platform and are told to deposit to keep withdrawing. Small withdrawals succeed at first, then larger deposits disappear.

Why it works

Nigeria has around 2,630 million crypto participants and stablecoins now move over $59 billion into the country each year, so crypto vocabulary sounds normal.

How to avoid it

Any guaranteed return is a scam. A real exchange does not let you deposit into a private wallet and does not need a 'platform' account to show your balance.

Fake check or overpayment fraud

Medium
How it works

A client sends a fake cheque or overpays, then asks you to refund the difference or pay a courier to release the goods.

Why it works

It often arrives as a first, small, friendly job that pays well.

How to avoid it

Never pay money to release a payment. If a client asks you to send any part of their payment onwards, end the conversation.

Your market, with real numbers

Rates, market size and how to get paid, for the four markets that matter most.

AI Tools in Kenya 2026: Paying with M-Pesa and Wise

Kenya leads the world in ChatGPT usage among internet users. Here is how Kenyan creators pay for global AI tools, and where mobile money fits and where it does not.

Questions we get every week

Straight answers, no hedging.

Not to start. A meaningful number of tools — Grammarly, Canva, Beacons, Hostinger and ChatGPT Go — accept naira cards directly, and many have free tiers that need no payment method at all. For the global tools that reject naira cards, a virtual USD card from Chipper Cash, Kuda, Grey or Flutterwave solves it. Keep the billing address on your card identical to the address at checkout, and hold an extra $5 above the price because gateways place a temporary authorisation above the amount.

Start with the free tiers, then pay for exactly one tool that matches the skill you are selling. If you write for clients, Jasper or Grammarly. If you produce video, ElevenLabs or Pictory. If you build automations for businesses, Cursor. Spending $20 a month on one tool that raises your rate beats $120 a month spread across five you barely use.

Beginners typically earn $100-$400 in their first one to six months. Intermediate freelancers with a portfolio and testimonials reach $1,200-$3,000. Experienced specialists with 18 months or more and repeat clients reach $3,000-$5,000. The top tier, roughly 5-10% of the market, earns $5,000-$10,000. The fastest route through the lower bands is AI-assisted service work, not content production.

For learning and testing, no — use the free tier. For client work, yes, but only on one or two tools. The difference shows up in the quality of what you can deliver under deadline, and clients pay for the deadline being met, not for the tool. A single avoided revision cycle usually covers the subscription.

Set up your receiving account before you land your first client. Scrambling to receive money after a client has agreed creates delays and looks unprofessional. In Nigeria, that means Paystack for local naira invoices plus Wise or Payoneer for international clients, and a virtual USD card for your own subscriptions. In Kenya, M-Pesa for local work and Wise for international.

Sending works. Receiving has been restricted since 2020 because of central bank guidance to banks, which pushed most Nigerian freelancers onto alternatives. Ghana and Kenya still have functional PayPal receiving. For Nigeria, treat PayPal as unusable for receiving client payments and plan around Wise, Payoneer, Paystack or stablecoins.

Yes, for service work. Data annotation, content work and localisation need no degree and no code. The requirement is judgement — knowing whether the output is correct, whether the claim is true, whether it fits the local context. That is exactly the part a machine cannot check for you.

Do not submit unedited AI output. Clients and platforms both detect it, and a suspended Upwork or Fiverr account costs more than any subscription saves. Use AI to organise, outline and speed up your own work, then apply judgement — verify the facts, add the local context, and be able to explain every claim you deliver.

Start with one tool, not five.

Spending $20 a month on the single tool that raises your rate beats $120 spread across five you barely open. Tell us what you sell and we'll tell you what to pay for.
